The 5th Annual Walker Bay Days another successful event for the community

The 5th Annual Walker Bay Days was another successful event for the community. Friday night began with the Walker Fisheries arriving with a live display of fish that live in Leech Lake; they were quickly followed with the arrival of the Onigum and Cass Lake area Ojibwe drummers and dancers for the Pow Wow exhibition, in all of their colorful regalia and traditional sounds.  Lee Turney explained the meaning of the music and the dance so that everyone attending could have a better understanding of the importance of a traditional Pow wow. The Northwood’s Audubon Center then took the stage with the live Rapture Program. Interpreters Elissa and Jennifer introduced us to a Great Horned Owl, Kestrel and a Red-tailed Hawk. They explained how important these large birds are to the environment and informed the audience of their habits and unique abilities. The Smith Family Band finished the opening evening by filling the park with music.

Saturday morning saw a line of future Big Dig participants lined up before 7:00 am! Once again approximately 500 children gathered to dig for a token and receive the toy of their choice! The Big Dig sponsors are Dale and Harriet Jones and because of their generosity we have a wonderful yearly event in the park that focuses on family fun. For the first time this year an Adult Big Dig was introduces and it too was a big hit, there were only 150 gift bags and all were claimed before the dig was done. The other new activity was a History Tent with local authors present during the day.

The volleyball tournment had a full bracket with 8 teams and Heather Schmidke’s team was the winning team. Throughout the afternoon many people spent time playing Bingo, enjoying food, listening to music or the Talent Show. The afternoon wrapped up with the Live Human Auction, the finals for the Talent Show and the Raffle drawings.

The evening started with the surprising arrival of the Blues Brothers in the back of the Police car! They continued to entertain the crowd with music and comedy for the next couple of hours. The events final act was the Hazbenz and they played to the crowd that braved the wet and cold evening. The 5th Annual Walker Bay Days was another great activity in the park and had something for everyone. The day is hosted by the Leech Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and is the accomplishment of many volunteers and sponsors.

Join us in 2011 on August 5th & 6th!
